More Problems with Windows Products

Trojan horse exploits image flaw | Tech News on ZDNet
Just one more reason to make sure that you have your computer updated with the latest patches from our friends at Microsoft... While I admit that I do use XP, I only use MSIE for a handful of sites, including Windows Update - since I am forced to use it! I use and proudly recommend FireFox to surf the web. Their new Preview Release was recently introduced - what are you waiting for? Download it now.

Google Now Using More Bots

Did Google Unleash Additional Googlebots

Check your server logs and you will no doubt find that Google has set more bots loose on the web. The exact reason for this is anyones guess, but speculation is running wild. Google certainly has been acting "weird" lately and one thing's for sure. I suspect big changes soon and more pages from people trying to cheat the system will be removed... much like all the pages for clients of TrafficPower.com were deleted a few months ago. Only the Google gods know what's up, but stay tuned, we'll all know soon enough.

RSS Digest - Easy Way to Show RSS on Web Pages

Show RSS (or Atom!) on any Web page with no coding or software installation needed
There are lots of tools out there to load RSS and Atom feeds onto a web page. Many are free and require just a little bit of scripting. Today I found one that is even easier and for newbies and experts alike, probably a better solution. It's called RSS Digest and it gives you all the options you're looking for with complete control over the look of the feeds. As of tonight it was only missing one feature IMHO, but Peter just added that. Check out his site and fire up some RSS on your site in just moments.

Google May Offer Their Own Web Browser Soon

The Google Browser (kottke.org)
Three years ago John Rhodes suggested that Google would offer their own web browser some day. That may have seemed like a far-fetched idea to many at the time, but it's an idea that just might come true soon. On April 26th of this year, Google registered GBrowser.com - time will tell, but it looks like Google may soon have their own web browser based on Mozilla.

With the many problems in MSIE and the recent move by many (including me and most of my clients) to FireFox, the Mozilla browsers are gaining much deserved market share.

Yet More Problems with Next Windows Release

Gates: Longhorn changed to make deadlines | Newsmakers | CNET News.com

Here is a recent article telling of the rescheduled release of Longhorn, the next major version of the Windows OS. Am I surprised by the delay? No, not at all. It's typical of Microsoft. They claim they had to work on Windows XP SP2, and that is one reason for the delay. True, they did have to do that and I'm not saying what they do is easy, it's certainly not... but if they just took security seriously in the first place, then they would not have to apply one band aid after another to their OS. (Note: September 1st it was reported that about 10% of those installing SP2 had some major problems with it. More Info Here)

Oh, and the "new features" we heard about in Longhorn - what's left? They are taking longer to release it and now they are no longer planning to include the full implementation of WinFS, "an ambitious file system geared toward letting users search through all of their files at once."

Microsoft to challenge Google - Good Luck

Boston.com / Business / Technology / Microsoft to challenge Google

"Steve Ballmer, president and CEO of Microsoft Corp., said a few days ago that his company is 'hell-bent and determined' to challenge Google Inc. for leadership in the Internet search business...

"...left no doubt that Microsoft has targeted Internet search services for the kind of all-out competitive push that the company once used to seize dominance in Web browser software. Despite Google's popularity, 'the search market is still quite fragmented,' Ballmer said, and existing tools still generate lots of useless results. Ballmer said Microsoft plans to invent new search technology that will change this, and make life more difficult for Google and other rivals."

-----

Well Steve, I wish you luck. You may have "all the money in the world" but if I were Google, I would watch my back, but certainly not loose any sleep over it.

A Soldier's Last Request - Do NOT Vote for Bush

t r u t h o u t - Sgt. Campbell's Sister | A Soldier's Last Request
Not to turn this into a political blog, but if you are actually still considering voting for Bush... please read the above link.

In fairness, I don't really think that Kerry will be much better, (they are very similar in too many ways), but Bush is a liar and anything but a true leader. He didn't win the election in 2000 and this year should not be any different.

Yahoo Local Search Beta Launched

local.yahoo.com

A few days ago Yahoo.com launched a beta of their Local Search which they hope will get us to use their product instead of the yellow pages. Combining Yahoo's search technology with their mapping tools, sure seems like a logical and smart move. After performing a search, you can click on "View Results on Map" and it will show your city/town with all the results mapped out. Mouseover each result to get details and then click for more information. I noticed some problems in mapping a few addresses, but this seems like a great start to a very useful search tool.

Still Using Internet Explorer?

I sure hope not. Buf if you are, why? I made the switch to FireFox several weeks ago and I couldn't be happier. FireFox has so many added features and unlike Internet Explorer, it's actually much safer to use. Even now that I have installed SP2 for Windows, I still use FireFox at least 95% of the time. (Note: A few web sites use features that are only available in Internet Explorer, and you will need it for Windows Update anyway.)

FireFox is fast, has tabbed browsing, and over 140 add-ins called extensions that allow you to add everything from lots of search tools, a Google Toolbar, a Page Rank tool, Web Developer tools and tons of things you've never heard of, but that will make your online life so much easier.

If you need some help "breaking free from MSIE," then I suggest you visit this site I found today - FireFoxIE.net
